West Ham United striker Michail Antonio remains optimistic about his return to the pitch following a serious leg injury sustained in a car accident last December.
Antonio’s vehicle collided with a tree while he was returning home from training, resulting in four fractures in his femur. He spent over three weeks in hospital after undergoing surgery to address the damage.
“The hardest part was the thought of not being there for my kids,” Antonio shared in an interview with the BBC’s Morning Live, which aired on Monday.
“It has given me a new lease on life, and I’m feeling grateful for the second chance I’ve been given.”
Now 34, Antonio has been a part of West Ham since 2015. He has managed to regain the ability to walk, but he acknowledges a lengthy recovery is still ahead before he can take to the field once more.
“They’ve informed me that it could take between six and twelve months for my leg to heal properly,” he explained.
“This is the most significant injury I’ve faced in my career. However, being two to three months ahead in my recovery gives me confidence that I will return to play. I’m sure that once I am back on the pitch, I will regain my sharpness.”
