In the aftermath of a painful playoff exit, LeBron James was not prepared to ponder his future right after concluding his 22nd season in the NBA.
While James hasn’t signalled any thoughts of retirement publicly, Lakers supporters are left anxiously awaiting his official plans as the league’s all-time leading scorer.
The star forward offered no clues post-game after contributing 22 points, seven rebounds, and six assists in the Lakers’ 103-96 defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

“Honestly, I don’t have an answer to that right now,” he stated. “I’ll need to sit down with my wife and my support group to discuss it and see where we go from here. The decision to continue or not is mine to make, and it doesn’t involve anyone else.”
Despite speculation suggesting a return for his 23rd season — a campaign that would set a new longevity record previously held by Vince Carter — most analysts believe that’s the case.
Additionally, James is just 49 games shy of Robert Parish’s NBA record of 1611 regular-season games played, while he already holds the record for most playoff appearances with 292 games.
However, the Lakers’ journey has ended prematurely again after the Timberwolves triumphed with a 4-1 series victory. The Los Angeles squad struggled to form a winning rhythm following the mid-season blockbuster trade that brought Luka Doncic on board in exchange for Anthony Davis.

Since clinching the championship in the 2020 Florida bubble, James’ Lakers have only advanced in the playoffs once. If he decides to return, he would be stepping into a revamped team that revolves around his new collaboration with Doncic.
The duo only shared the court for 21 games since the trade, not providing ample time to unlock their combined potential.
A full season together could elevate their partnership to impressive heights, and James appears enthusiastic about the idea of teaming up for an entire season or more with the Slovenian star, whom he has named as his favourite active player.
Moreover, James’ commitment could also be influenced by his 20-year-old son, Bronny, who enjoyed a surprisingly promising rookie season with the Lakers, marking them as the first father-son duo to compete on the NBA stage.
Bronny is eager to secure a more significant role alongside his father next season after receiving limited minutes this year. LeBron has expressed that the opportunity to play with Bronny was his greatest career achievement.

In earlier developments, Rudy Gobert achieved playoff career records with 27 points and 24 rebounds, while Julius Randle contributed 23 points as the Minnesota Timberwolves clinched a spot in the NBA playoffs, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 103-96 in Game 5 of their first-round series.
Anthony Edwards also made a mark with 15 points and 11 rebounds for the sixth-seeded Wolves, who secured three consecutive victories to boot James and Doncic out of their first postseason together.
James faced backlash for allegedly “flopping” after being struck by Timberwolves player Donte DiVincenzo during the fourth quarter, in a series where he faced a relentless physical challenge from the opposing defence.
After achieving back-to-back playoff round advancements for the first time in franchise history, Minnesota is set to face the winner of the series between Houston and Golden State, with the Rockets managing to stave off elimination as the Warriors lead 3-2.
Doncic delivered a strong performance, scoring 28 points and providing nine assists, while the Lakers fell in the first round for a second consecutive year despite reshaping their roster mid-season with the impactful trade for Doncic.
Rui Hachimura also shone with 23 points for the Lakers, who have only made it past the opening round once in five seasons since their championship win in 2020.

Minnesota triumphed in Game 5, capitalising on Gobert’s dominant display in the paint, even as they struggled with long-range shooting, going 7 for 47 from three-point range — including 17 consecutive misses until Mike Conley landed a decisive three with just 1:22 left.
Following a split in the first two games in Los Angeles, the Wolves took command of the series with two tight victories at home, showcasing superior execution in the crucial moments.
Gobert thrived when the Lakers opted for a small-ball lineup in Game 5, scoring more points than he had in the previous four games combined, while the Lakers missed five straight shots in the clutch, with over 3 minutes elapsing without scoring.
After playing an entire second half in Game 4 with a five-man rotation, the Lakers altered their starting lineup for Game 5, keeping persistent wing Dorian Finney-Smith in instead of centre Jaxson Hayes.
Lakers coach JJ Redick defended his unorthodox substitutions this week, exhibiting frustration when quizzed about his choices leading into Game 5.
