On Friday, the Indiana Pacers established a new record for the most points scored in an NBA game this season, amassing an impressive 162 points against the struggling Washington Wizards.
However, it was the scoreless final minute that sparked frustration among the fans in attendance in Washington.
The Pacers opted to run down the shot clock by simply dribbling, resulting in a turnover and handing the ball back to the Wizards, much to the discontent of the crowd.
While it’s standard practice in NBA games to dribble out the final seconds when the outcome is no longer in doubt, taking this approach for an entire final minute is quite unusual.
The local Washington commentary team appeared at a loss for words in response to the situation.
“This is what it has come to… fans are booing because the Pacers aren’t attempting to score more. Everyone has their own take on it!”
The Pacers also set a franchise record by sinking 24 three-pointers, with Aussie guard Johnny Furphy contributing one of them during the closing moments of the game.
In this one-sided victory, nine players managed to score in double digits.
This marks the highest score in a game since February 2023, when the Clippers and Kings engaged in a thrilling 176-175 overtime showdown.
Currently, the Pacers are sitting comfortably in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 43 wins, whilst the Wizards find themselves at the bottom with just 16 wins.
