Arsenal’s hopes of competing for the Premier League title appear to be fading, hindered further by ongoing injury issues. However, former star Thierry Henry believes they are well-positioned to chase Champions League glory.
The Gunners delivered an emphatic 7-1 victory against PSV Eindhoven away from home on Tuesday, effectively securing their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where they will likely face reigning champions Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid next month.
Jurrien Timber, who netted Arsenal’s opening goal, commented prior to the match in the Netherlands that this was an opportunity for Mikel Arteta’s team to redefine their season following a tough stretch in the Premier League.
And with their stunning performance at the Philips Stadion, they certainly made a bold statement, showcasing their intent.
Henry, Arsenal’s all-time top scorer and a veteran of the 2006 Champions League final loss to Barcelona, feels that with the title race virtually concluded, the London side can now focus entirely on European ambitions.
“Yes, they can (win the Champions League),” Henry stated in an interview with CBS Sports Golazo. “That’s why I believe it.”
“What I’m saying is, now show us you can do it against a strong opponent, especially with players returning from injury.”
“No disrespect to Eindhoven, I anticipated it would be a challenging match, particularly playing away, yet they made it look simple. It was an exceptional performance.”
While Arsenal may face a slight disadvantage with the home leg first in the quarter-finals, Henry believes their display against PSV should instil confidence in the side.
“We all recognise that the Premier League title is effectively gone, barring something extraordinary. But this match can help build confidence for the Champions League and their upcoming fixture against either Real Madrid or Atletico,” the Frenchman noted.
“Sometimes, the journey to the final can be advantageous or not, but if you aspire to win the competition, you must conquer these teams.”
