Teen sensation Alexandra Eala caused yet another upset at the Miami Open, defeating five-time Grand Slam titleholder and second seed Iga Swiatek with a score of 6-2, 7-5 in the quarter-finals.
The 19-year-old left-handed player, who earned a wild card entry for the WTA 1000 event, is currently the sole Filipino competitor on the professional tennis circuit, holding a rank of 140th.
In this remarkable journey, Eala has advanced to her first WTA semi-final by eliminating her third Grand Slam champion, achieving the win in just 1 hour and 37 minutes.
Her path has included victories over 2017 French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko and reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys, currently ranked No. 5. This win marked Eala’s inaugural triumph against a top-10 player.

Eala also benefitted from a walkover in the fourth round against Paula Badosa, which allowed her some well-deserved rest.
In their match, Swiatek initially broke Eala in the first game; however, the determined teenager broke back immediately. Remarkably, the first two games took a full 15 minutes to complete.

Swiatek hit a forehand long on set point, closing out the first set in 42 minutes, leaving Eala just one set away from the semi-finals, where she is set to compete against either Jessica Pegula from the US or Britain’s Emma Raducanu, who will clash on Thursday AEDT.
While Eala represents the Philippines, she has spent the last six years residing in Mallorca, where she trains at the Rafael Nadal Tennis Academy.
