In a breathtaking encounter, the Waratahs have toppled the Chiefs from the top of the standings with a thrilling victory at Allianz Stadium.
The standout moment came with a remarkable 100-metre try by Teddy Wilson early in the second half.
“This is one of the most extraordinary tries we’ve ever witnessed at Allianz Stadium,” commentator Sean Moloney remarked on Stan Sport.
In the 44th minute, as the Chiefs pressed against the line, a knock-on occurred, giving the Waratahs the opportunity to run it out from their in-goal area.
The ball was quickly routed to Andrew Kellaway, who found space and sprinted 35 metres before offloading to Joseph Suaalii. The cross-code sensation then delivered a clever pass to Lawson Creighton, who saw Kellaway receive the ball once again as the stadium erupted in cheers.
Kellaway’s final pass floated over the head of Cortez Ratima, allowing Wilson to complete the spectacular run.
“The forwards laid the groundwork for the turnover, and then, like any good number 9 should, Wilson takes it coast to coast,” noted Morgan Turinui.
Earlier on, Suaalii marked his Super Rugby debut with the first try of his career, showcasing a brilliant solo run.
Receiving the ball just before the 22-metre mark, he left Damian McKenzie bewildered, and neither Leroy Carter, Quinn Tupaea, nor Shaun Stevenson could stop him as he electrified the crowd.
“How did he? I’ll tell you how he did it—he simply wouldn’t be denied. It’s all about individual quality,” Turinui commented.
The Tahs extended their lead in the 24th minute as Triston Reilly notched up his fifth try of the season.
Just moments later, it appeared that Lalakai Foketi had crossed in the corner for another try, but the TMO determined the ball was grounded simultaneously on the tryline and the in-goal line, resulting in no score.
Frustration and boos echoed around Allianz Stadium when Leroy Carter responded for the Chiefs following a debatable pass from Luke Jacobson.
Controversy continued with five minutes left in the half as Gideon Wrampling was shown a yellow card for foul play after executing a dangerous tackle on Suaalii.
At half-time, the score stood at 14-7.
Wilson’s incredible try widened the lead, but the Chiefs weren’t finished, as Samipeni Finau powered his way over in the 52nd minute.
As full time neared, the Waratahs faced a challenge when Miles Amatosero received a yellow card due to repeated penalties.
In the 86th minute, the home side’s defence was finally rewarded when the referee blew his whistle, signalling the end of the match.
“That’s a special one. It’ll certainly rank among the best,” Waratahs captain Hugh Sinclair shared during the Stan broadcast.
“The crowd was phenomenal, especially during that final passage of play. I believe they got their money’s worth with those momentum shifts. I’m absolutely thrilled to secure the win after a tough couple of weeks away. We felt the pressure at half-time.”
This defeat marked the Chiefs’ first loss to the Waratahs since 2016.
