Southampton have become the first team in Premier League history to be relegated this early in the season, following a 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
The Saints’ loss means they will be relegated back to the Championship, sealing their fate with seven matches still left to play—the earliest any club has had their destiny confirmed in the Premier League.
Previously, Ipswich, Huddersfield, Sheffield United, and Derby County had the joint record, having been relegated with just six games remaining.
The defeat against Spurs leaves Southampton unable to catch Wolverhampton Wanderers, who currently sit 17th, a whopping 22 points clear of the relegation zone, with only 21 points still to contest.

Flashscore
This season, Southampton has only accumulated a mere 10 points from two victories and four draws and is at risk of breaking the record for the lowest points achieved in a Premier League season, currently held by Derby County with just 11 points during the 2007/08 campaign.
It’s worth mentioning that the Derby side was relegated earlier in the season, but Southampton has reached this point in the season earlier based on the number of games played.
Following the dismissal of Russell Martin in December 2024, Ivan Juric was appointed to steer the club towards a miraculous escape in the latter half of the season. However, the Croatian manager has only secured one league win since taking over.
With seven matches left to play, the Saints are compelled to prevent themselves from finishing the season with the lowest points total in Premier League history, following their promotion from the Championship last season.
