Lee Kang-in of Paris Saint-Germain will be sidelined for South Korea’s crucial World Cup qualifier at home against Jordan on Tuesday after sustaining an ankle injury, as confirmed by his national coach.
The 24-year-old attacking midfielder had previously set up Wolves’ Hwang Hee-chan for a goal during a 1-1 draw against Oman at home last Thursday.
Lee, who has made 35 appearances and scored nine goals for his country, was taken off five minutes before the match concluded at Goyang Stadium.
Having come on as a substitute in the first half, he reportedly injured his left ankle, according to Yonhap News Agency.
Coach Hong Myung-bo informed the media that Lee, along with Birmingham City’s Paik Seung-ho and UAE’s Al Wasl player Jung Seung-hyun, will also be unavailable for selection.
“Tests revealed that Lee Kang-in’s injury is not as severe as we initially feared,” Hong stated on Saturday, as reported by Yonhap.
“I had a conversation with him, and I’m reassured of his dedication to the national team.
“However, he holds equal importance for both his club and the national team.”
South Korea currently leads Asian qualifying Group B, boasting four wins and three draws from seven matches, positioning them well for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Nevertheless, they were held to a draw by Oman late in the game and now sit just three points ahead of both Jordan and Iraq, with three matches remaining.
The top two teams from the group will secure direct qualification for the World Cup.
