Inter Milan clinched a dramatic 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday, thanks to the resolute mentality of the Italian side. However, coach Simone Inzaghi acknowledged that more challenges lie ahead.
The treble-chasing Inter, who have only conceded three goals across 11 Champions League fixtures this season, secured an 88th-minute winner from Davide Frattesi, just minutes after Bayern had equalised through substitute Thomas Müller.
This marked Bayern’s first home loss in the tournament since April 2021.
“We demonstrated great depth in our performance, which is a positive,” Inzaghi remarked. “We understand the significance of this result against Bayern, but it will ultimately mean little unless we replicate it in the second leg at San Siro in front of our supporters.”
“We recognise that this is only halftime in the tie; the second battle will be at San Siro. Bayern are an incredibly strong team, yet Inter matched them in terms of determination, courage, and aggression,” he continued.
Inter captain Lautaro Martínez put his team ahead in the 38th minute after Bayern’s Harry Kane had struck the post early in the match.
Despite Bayern dominating possession for much of the game, Inter’s sturdy defence stood firm.
“They made efforts, but they encountered an Inter side that performed well,” Inzaghi stated. “We executed our game plan effectively, as we demonstrated with the second goal—a brilliant finish, even after conceding the equaliser shortly before.
“We made a conscious effort to take possession away from Bayern. When they have the ball, it’s tough to wrestle it back. We needed to approach this match with confidence.
“While Bayern attempted to press us, Inter showcased quality football to evade it. We deserve recognition for maintaining our belief in securing victory until the final whistle, even after conceding a goal just moments prior,” Inzaghi added.
The return leg is scheduled for next week, with the winner set to face either Barcelona or Borussia Dortmund.
