Demons head coach Simon Goodwin has responded to speculation suggesting that Clayton Oliver’s absence from the team’s victory over the Eagles was linked to frustrations within the club.
Last week, the Demons released a statement announcing that Oliver would miss the match due to a “challenging week personally.”
His absence kicked off rumours of discontent regarding his playing time, along with fresh whispers that he might be seeking a move at the conclusion of the season.
Clayton is set to return for the high-stakes clash against Hawthorn at the MCG this Saturday afternoon.
When asked on Thursday if he felt frustrated by the ongoing speculation, Goodwin responded directly.

“The more significant issue is that Clayton finds these speculations frustrating,” he stated.
“That’s the key point… none of it is accurate. He holds no resentment, nor is he upset about his game time—he’s genuinely content and satisfied.”
“Many of these matters were addressed previously, at the conclusion of last season.”
“He’s in a very positive place, aiming to be the best teammate he can be, which is where any frustration stems from.”
Goodwin shared that Oliver received “excellent medical advice” suggesting he should not travel to the west and that it was “quite clear” he needed some time off.
He hinted that Oliver may require additional breaks later in the season.
“We’re really proud that he acknowledged his needs and took that time,” he remarked.
“What we’ve observed over the last few days is a revitalised Clayton, eager to rejoin the team.”
“He has been on a lengthy journey, with mostly positive strides. Yet, sometimes, it’s necessary to pause and take a step back to move forward.”
During pre-season, Oliver sought a transfer to Geelong and even met with several Cats players at Rhys Stanley’s farm.
In June 2022, Oliver secured a substantial seven-year contract extension with Melbourne.
