Coach Diego Simeone has declared that Atletico Madrid will continue their pursuit of the LaLiga title until the very end, despite falling further behind leaders Barcelona and Real Madrid after managing just one point from a possible nine in their last three matches during March.
Atletico, currently in third place, broke their three-match winless streak on Sunday when Pablo Barrios secured a breathtaking 2-1 victory against Sevilla with a last-minute goal. This crucial win lifted them to 60 points in the league standings.
During this recent unfavourable period, Atletico also saw their exits from both the Champions League and the Copa del Rey.
Sunday’s triumph has kept their slim hopes alive for the LaLiga title following dropped points by both Barca and Real on Saturday. Simeone’s squad is now seven points adrift of Barcelona, while Real, having lost 2-1 to Valencia, sit three points ahead of Atletico.

“I continue to emphasise that we must focus on our own progress, striving to improve continuously. Is it going to be tough? Absolutely! Will we face challenges? For sure! But we will persevere, keep trying, and fight until the end because that’s who we are,” Simeone stated during a press conference.
“Barrios’ goal is a testament to the quality of our efforts. The players are showing resilience and determination time and time again.”
“This victory was significant considering the challenges we’ve encountered over the past few weeks… (Sevilla) took an early lead, but we managed to bounce back, and after (Julian Alvarez) equalised, we played well, creating several chances until the striking goal at the death brought us enormous joy, showcasing our refusal to give up.”
Next up, they will be hosting last-placed Valladolid.
