AC Milan manager Sergio Conceicao stated that while he doesn’t typically offer excuses, the absence of pivotal players significantly affected his side during their 2-1 loss to Napoli on Sunday.
The Rossoneri, currently ninth in the Serie A rankings with 47 points, were without midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek after he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and had surgery just hours before the match.
Conceicao revealed that defender Malick Thiaw was unable to participate due to intestinal issues, and winger Rafael Leao, who came off the bench in the second half, was experiencing discomfort following the international break.
“Since taking charge, I have never made excuses, despite our busy schedule of matches every three days until a fortnight ago, but today was particularly challenging,” the Portuguese coach told the media.
“The doctor informed me that Loftus-Cheek required surgery, Thiaw had intestinal problems, and Leao felt some pain in his thigh… I don’t want to dwell on misfortune, even though today was particularly tough.”
Conceicao acknowledged the need for improvement from his team after conceding two early goals in the first half, although he highlighted the positive response they showed in the second half, coming close to equalising in stoppage time.
“Napoli managed to break through our pressing too easily in the first half, but we made the necessary adjustments in the second half, playing with greater courage and determination,” he remarked.
“We were missing a certain edge, but I remain confident—there’s a positive atmosphere within the group, and I don’t want to disrupt that.”
Milan now shifts focus to the Coppa Italia, where they will face their fierce rivals and current Serie A leaders Inter Milan in the first leg of the semi-finals on Wednesday.
“It’s a crucial match, as the Coppa Italia is one of the club’s key objectives,” Conceicao emphasised.
“The players have already demonstrated their character; we need to continue refining our balance. It’s challenging for everyone in this position in the league, but I have faith in a squad that is eager to turn these results around.”
