Ruben Amorim acknowledged that time is not on his side as Manchester United’s manager, following a disappointing loss to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday evening.
Former United attacker Anthony Elanga secured a commanding victory for Forest with an impressive early goal at the City Ground, inflicting United’s 13th defeat of the Premier League season.
This latest setback leaves United just one defeat shy of equalling their record of 14 losses in the 2023-24 Premier League season, as they find themselves languishing in 13th place on the table while Amorim battles to implement meaningful changes.
“At Manchester United, there is no time to waste,” Amorim remarked. “I need to get things right quickly.
“The pressure here can be immense at times. We started the match by conceding a goal, allowing Nottingham to settle into their preferred style of play—defending in numbers—while they possess rapid players capable of quick transitions.
“Despite this, we managed to control the game fairly well, particularly in the second half. We pushed forward, but once again, we fell short in the final third.”
Alejandro Garnacho wasted several opportunities for United, registering six of the team’s 24 shots on goal but failing to seriously challenge Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels.
Amorim has previously backed the young Argentine and reiterated that Garnacho’s overall contributions meet the standard expected.
“He puts in an effort,” Amorim explained. “He is trying hard. Sometimes, even when you’re doing the right things, your execution in the final third can falter—that’s just football.
“What’s most crucial for me is that he tracks back when needed. Naturally, we desire a player who can take on a defender one-on-one. Occasionally, he might overexert himself.
“His intention is to assist the team and perform to the best of his ability—sometimes his decision-making isn’t ideal, but it wouldn’t be fair to single out any one player for criticism today.”
