Former Netherlands international Robin van Persie, 41, is set to return to Feyenoord as the club’s new head coach, according to reports from Dutch media on Saturday. This marks a swift return for Van Persie to the club where he both began and concluded his illustrious playing career.
This week, Feyenoord successfully advanced to the last 16 of the Champions League and has reached an agreement with Heerenveen, allowing Van Persie to make the switch and take charge from next week.
While neither club has officially confirmed the move, sources indicate that Feyenoord will pay a fee to Heerenveen for Van Persie’s immediate departure.
Heerenveen had signed Van Persie to a two-year contract at the beginning of the season for his first role as a senior coach, though his tenure has been inconsistent, leaving the team sitting in ninth place in the Eredivisie.

Feyenoord’s season has been turbulent; they experienced a heavy 9-1 defeat at AZ Alkmaar back in September and were knocked out of the cup by amateur side Quick Boys. Moreover, they have yet to win in their last five matches, although they did secure a notable victory against reigning champions PSV Eindhoven in December.
Van Persie, who began his career as a teenager at Feyenoord, helped the club claim the Dutch Cup in 2018. He also had successful stints with Arsenal and Manchester United, notching an impressive 50 goals in 102 appearances for the Netherlands national team.
Recently, he joined Feyenoord’s coaching staff, working with the youth teams and serving as an assistant to Arne Slot.
