“We’re on the brink of a new era,” proclaimed Danish national team coach Brian Riemer ahead of today’s announcement of his squad for the pivotal Nations League quarter-finals against Portugal.
Riemer hinted at changes to the squad as he reveals the team for the upcoming quarter-finals after a four-month hiatus for the Danish national side.
Since taking on the role in October, Riemer has had more than 100 days to prepare and will unveil “his own team” for the first time this Tuesday.
“It’s time to embark on a new journey. Four months have gone by, and the player selections will reflect that transformation, incorporating elements of my vision,” Riemer stated in an interview with Danish news agency Ritzau.
“Expect to see quick players with a natural attacking instinct, players who can apply pressure to our opponents. That’s the style I’m aiming for.”
“Tactical changes won’t be drastic, and you won’t see 15 new faces in the squad. However, you can certainly anticipate a team featuring players who possess courage, speed, and creativity as key attributes.”
Among those likely to be included is AS Monaco’s Mika Biereth, who recently broke Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s goalscoring record in Ligue 1, particularly in light of Denmark’s recent difficulties in front of goal.
“He’s making great strides. When you perform at the level he has lately, it puts you in an excellent position for selection in the Danish national team,” Riemer commented.
Like Biereth, Jesper Lindstrom has also caught Riemer’s eye. The Everton midfielder has emerged as a regular contributor in the Premier League and is aiming for his first significant call-up since 2023.
“We’re looking for players who can drive forward with the ball, allowing us to adopt a more direct style of play. When we find ourselves in one-on-one situations in the opposition’s final third, we need to be aggressive—challenging the defence, crossing, or shooting on goal,” Riemer explained, emphasising the need for strong individualists to complement those who maintain balance within the squad to create a cohesive, hardworking unit.
The Nations League quarter-final against Portugal is scheduled for 20 and 23 March.
