Real Madrid’s manager, Carlo Ancelotti, is set to stand trial next Wednesday due to allegations of failing to declare income to Spain’s tax authorities, as confirmed by the Madrid court handling the case on Friday.
The Madrid public prosecutor’s office claims that the 65-year-old Italian’s reported actions resulted in a loss of over one million euros (£854,000) in unpaid taxes linked to his image rights during 2014 and 2015.
According to a spokesperson for the court, the trial will commence on Wednesday and is anticipated to last for two days.
As a stipulation of the proceedings, Ancelotti, who has an impressive tally of five Champions League titles to his name – three of which he secured with Real Madrid – is required to be present during the hearings.
Prosecutors allege that Ancelotti only reported the salary he received from Real Madrid in his tax filings for those two years, despite declaring himself a tax resident in Spain and indicating that his residence was in Madrid.
They also accuse him of establishing a “complex” and “confusing” network of shell corporations to conceal additional earnings from his image rights, as well as from real estate ventures.
A Spanish court mandated in 2023 that Ancelotti face trial over this matter, but a specific date was not established at that time.
Commenting on the situation last year, Ancelotti referred to it as “an old story that I hope will be resolved soon” when questioned about the controversy.
He first joined Real Madrid in 2013, departing in May 2015, before moving to Bayern Munich the following year.
The former Italy international, who clinched the European Cup twice as a player with AC Milan, has also managed clubs such as Napoli and Everton before his return to Real Madrid in 2021.
In addition to his Champions League achievements, Ancelotti has earned domestic league titles with Madrid and Milan, as well as in England with Chelsea, in Germany with Bayern Munich, and in France with Paris Saint-Germain.
