A supporter of Rangers who made the journey to Istanbul to witness the Glasgow side take on Fenerbahce tragically lost his life in a traffic accident just hours before the match, both clubs expressed on Thursday, extending their condolences.
The identity of the deceased fan remains undisclosed, but he had come to Turkey’s largest city for the Europa League last-16 fixture against Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce, scheduled for Thursday evening.
Footage from traffic cameras shared by Turkey’s SabahTV depicted an individual crossing a pedestrian crossing on a broad avenue before being struck by a vehicle.
This unfortunate event occurred in the Besiktas district in the early hours of Thursday, with both the driver involved and another motorist facing legal proceedings, according to reports.
A representative from the British embassy confirmed that consular assistance had been offered to the family of the British national, yet further information regarding the incident was not disclosed.
“We are heartbroken to have learned of the passing of one of our supporters in a traffic incident overnight in Istanbul,” Rangers FC shared on X, sending their thoughts to the family and friends “during this incredibly challenging time”.
Fenerbahce also expressed their grief, stating they had “learned with profound sadness that a Rangers FC supporter who travelled to Istanbul to cheer for his team in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League last 16 round” had “tragically died in a traffic accident”.
“We wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the fan’s family, the Rangers club, and the wider community,” the club posted on X.
