Roberto Martinez, the head coach of the Portuguese national team, lavished praise on Denmark’s performance following an exhilarating encounter in Lisbon, where Portugal secured a spot in the Nations League semifinals with a 5-2 victory over the Danes.
“It’s fantastic that the format allows for Denmark and Portugal to clash in a quarter-final. In Copenhagen, they were deserving of more goals, but today (Sunday, ed.) they perhaps deserved a bit less. However, matches like this emerge when both teams commit to attacking football,” Martinez stated in an interview with TV 2 Sport.
“I hold great respect for the Danish head coach and his players. They are a formidable opponent and exude confidence on the pitch. We’ve witnessed over 180 minutes of top-tier football,” he added.
Martinez also expressed admiration for the tactical approach taken by Danish national team coach Brian Riemer during the match.
“The coach’s philosophies and tactics align quite well with my own vision of the game, so it was exciting to see two teams eager to attack, which ultimately led to extra time. I wish Denmark all the best moving forward, and I hope we can face each other again in the future, as these encounters are truly entertaining,” remarked Martinez.
The tournament’s Final Four is set to take place from 4-8 June in Germany.
