Phil Gould has endorsed the dynamic South Sydney fullback Jye Gray to secure a spot in the 17-man squad for the long haul, as Latrell Mitchell’s return approaches.
Gray has been outstanding for the Rabbitohs throughout the first three rounds, but it’s anticipated that he won’t retain the No. 1 jersey when the club’s star player makes his comeback.
Nonetheless, Gould believes that the young talent should be shifted to the bench, potentially creating a “nightmare” scenario for opposing teams.
“He’s earned his place, and he’s exactly the kind of player that Wayne Bennett loves,” Gould commented on Wide World of Sports’ Six Tackles With Gus.
“Latrell Mitchell is one of the elite fullbacks in the competition, and I’m confident that once he returns, he’ll take back that position—however, I’m quite sure Wayne Bennett will find a way to keep Jye Gray in the 17 somehow.”
“He would be a nightmare for rival coaches coming off the bench… introducing him when players are fatigued would be a real challenge.”
