FC Copenhagen’s coach, Jacob Neestrup, has expressed regret over the way he articulated his criticisms regarding FC Midtjylland’s tactics during throw-ins, which has led to substantial backlash from both fans and football analysts across Denmark.
Following their recent encounter, Neestrup openly chastised FC Midtjylland for their practice of gaining extra yards at every throw-in.
However, Neestrup has since faced harsh criticism from FC Midtjylland’s coach, Thomas Thomasberg, who accused him of dishonesty following their clash. On Thursday, Neestrup acknowledged that he had misspoken in his effort to clarify his unusual reaction to the narrow 1-0 victory over Thomasberg’s team.
“I am incredibly frustrated with myself for failing to deliver an important and potentially game-changing point, especially regarding something that could impact the standings. In trying to convey this, I exaggerated unnecessarily, which shows my inexperience even after 2.5 years in this role,” he admitted, adding:
“When I want to make a point, I need to present it more sharply. Unfortunately, the focus has shifted from the actual issue to my delivery, which I still believe is entirely valid and fair.”
“I am genuinely annoyed that I provided the worst post-match interview in my 2.5 years as FC Copenhagen’s coach. My lack of clarity meant the conversation diverted elsewhere. However, I’m relieved to see the topic addressed nonetheless. It was vital to raise this issue following a win rather than a loss,” Neestrup concluded, stating:
“I firmly stand by my point, but I certainly didn’t communicate it effectively. Sometimes, when I step into the lion’s den, I have to be prepared for the consequences,”
he added. FC Copenhagen will next be in action on 2 March against AaB in Aalborg.
