Jamal Musiala, the German international midfielder from Bayern Munich, is not thrilled with Mika Biereth’s decision to represent Denmark.
Biereth, who was born in London in 2003 to a Danish-German father and a Bosnian mother, was eligible to play for several countries, including Bosnia, Germany, and England, in addition to Denmark.
Musiala, who emerged as a standout player for “Die Mannschaft” during last summer’s EURO tournament, had hoped to sway Biereth towards playing for Germany.
“I have had discussions with him, and he would have preferred I chose Germany. However, my heart has always been set on representing Denmark, and I’m delighted to be here. I’m looking forward to getting some minutes and establishing myself as a true A national team player,” Biereth told TV 2 Sport.
“Our families are close, and he understands that I have German roots. He converses in German with my father, and understandably, he’s not too pleased with my choice. But I’m content with my decision and I’m looking ahead to the future.”
Musiala faced a similar dilemma earlier in his career, having played for England at various youth levels before ultimately opting to represent Germany.
Biereth, who has already netted 11 goals and recorded three hat-tricks for AS Monaco this season, is expected to receive his first cap for Denmark during the Nations League quarter-finals against Portugal on the 20th and 23rd of March.
