Borussia Mönchengladbach made a significant move in their quest for a top-six finish in the Bundesliga, securing a 1-0 victory over RB Leipzig. This marked their first win this season against any opponent ranked ninth or higher at the time.
In a clash between fifth and seventh in the league, the significance of the match felt amplified, nearly akin to a six-pointer with Gladbach chasing Leipzig for the coveted higher position.
The hosts started strong, creating the first clear opportunity of the match when Alassane Plea flicked on a ball, allowing Robin Hack to find a bit of space. Unfortunately for Hack, his volley went straight to the waiting hands of Maarten Vandevoordt.
Leipzig found themselves largely limited to long-range efforts, as illustrated by Xavi Simons’ attempt from outside the box, which failed to threaten the goal effectively.
The uninspiring first half was not what many anticipated from two sides competing high up the table. However, with plenty still to fight for, there was an underlying hope that the second half would bring a change in fortunes.
Leipzig wasted no time at the start of the second half, quickly creating a promising chance, but Christoph Baumgartner’s shot flew just over the crossbar. He was soon involved again, making a run into the area and narrowly missing the target with a header.
Those missed opportunities would come back to haunt Leipzig just moments later when Gladbach found the breakthrough.
Ko Itakura thought he had scored, but his shot was blocked, falling kindly for Plea, who made no mistake with his close-range finish.
Following his goal, Plea was on fire and came close to doubling the score when his shot from the edge of the box rattled the post.
The hosts continued to apply pressure, and 20 minutes from time, Nico Elvedi had a header that hit the outside of the post, adding to their mounting chances.
Gladbach will feel they should have secured the win more comfortably given their opportunities, including a third shot that hit the woodwork through Plea, but their struggles to convert created a tense final few minutes.
Despite this, they managed to hold on, claiming three vital points in their pursuit of a top-six finish while also condemning Leipzig to their fourth consecutive match without scoring on the road in the Bundesliga.
