Moises Henriques, a former Test player and long-time NSW representative, has officially announced his retirement from first-class cricket.
The 38-year-old confirmed his availability for one-day competitions and the Big Bash League; however, he has concluded his 19-year career in the Sheffield Shield.
“I effectively made the decision to retire from Sheffield Shield cricket prior to Christmas this year,” Henriques stated. “It has been a privilege to lead and represent this state for such an extended period, but playing for NSW entails leading not just through words and preparation but through performance as well.

“While my body was still capable, even at this age, I just wasn’t securing victories for my state in the longer form of the game, which I believe is essential at this point in my career. We have an incredible group of young players ready to step up and take this great state forward, and I’ll be watching with a keen interest. I want to thank them for creating an enjoyable work environment for me.
“I’m leaving the team in excellent hands with Jack Edwards, who has already demonstrated strong leadership at such an early stage in his career.”
Henriques represented Australia in four Test matches, accumulating a total of 164 runs between 2013 and 2016. However, his most significant contributions were made at the state level, donning NSW colours in 110 Sheffield Shield matches, making him the fourth most capped player for the state. He also captained the New South Wales side on 33 occasions.

“Moises’ contributions on the field for NSW are well documented, but it’s also important to acknowledge what he has offered off the field for so many years,” said Greg Shipperd, coach of the Blues. “He is the epitome of a professional and a leader, and cricket in NSW has benefited tremendously from Moises’ involvement.
“This past season, both in the One-Day Cup and the BBL, he demonstrated that he still has much to give, and I’m excited to continue collaborating with Moises. While he won’t be part of our red-ball squad moving forward, I am eager about the new wave of young leaders emerging in our program. Jack Edwards really stepped up this season, and it’s an exciting time for our team.”
