The Football Association has lodged a request to lengthen the suspension of Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts after his challenge resulted in Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta requiring 25 stitches in his left ear, the governing body announced on Wednesday.
During the sixth minute of last Saturday’s FA Cup clash, Roberts rushed out of his goal to intercept a pass and collided with Mateta, striking him in the head.
Initially, referee Michael Oliver issued a yellow card, but after reviewing the incident with VAR, he upgraded it to a straight red card. Palace chairman Steve Parish labelled it the most reckless challenge he had ever witnessed.
“The FA asserts that the standard punishment for this incident is clearly inadequate,” the organisation stated via a post on X.
“Liam Roberts has until Thursday, 6 March, to respond.”
Roberts is set to serve a three-match ban for serious foul play, and Millwall has indicated they will contest any extension to the suspension.
“Millwall acknowledges the FA’s statement and will continue to support Liam, who has faced appalling online abuse since Saturday’s incident,” the club said.
Roberts missed Millwall’s home defeat against Bristol City in the Championship on Tuesday, but fans showed their support for the keeper with applause in the sixth minute of the match.
Frenchman Mateta, who has been in exceptional form for Palace, received 10 minutes of treatment on the field before being taken to hospital for a severe laceration.
“I’m doing well. I hope to return soon and stronger than ever,” Mateta shared on social media.
