Having the opportunity to meet Lionel Messi shortly before the Miami Open semi-finals provided Jakub Mensik with the perfect inspiration. The 19-year-old stunned the world number four, Taylor Fritz, on Friday, securing his spot in the final of his first Masters 1000 event, where he will face off against Novak Djokovic.
The Czech player shared a handshake with Messi and expressed his gratitude by inscribing “Thx Leo” on a camera lens following what he described as the most significant victory of his career.
“I was shaking his hand… just hanging out with him for a bit. I didn’t wash my hand before heading onto the court, and I reckon that was the secret to today’s success,” Mensik quipped after overcoming Fritz with a score of 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.
The final on Saturday will see Mensik go up against Djokovic, who is aiming for a remarkable 100th career title, making this clash even more special for the young star.
“Novak Djokovic is my tennis inspiration. He’s the reason I took up the sport. He’s my ultimate idol,” Mensik revealed in an interview with the ATP Tour last year.
In their only previous encounter at the Shanghai Masters last October, Djokovic triumphed over Mensik in straight sets.
