Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd has asserted that the Demons have fallen short in demonstrating their proclaimed “love” for their teammates and the club during the pre-season, particularly through their disappointing performances on the field.
With a dismal 0-3 start to the season, the Demons seem a mere shadow of the formidable team that clinched the premiership in 2021.
Off-field issues have plagued the club in recent years, contributing to a culture that some perceive as increasingly toxic.

Over the years, the club has faced multiple high-profile controversies, including a widely publicised altercation between Steven May and Jake Melksham, as well as Joel Smith’s violation of anti-doping protocols.
Recent incidents, like Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver’s attempts to seek trades at the close of last season and discord within the boardroom, have kept the Demons in the media for all the wrong reasons.
On Nine’s Footy Classified, Lloyd pointed out that Richmond overcame a similar situation in 2017 through actions rather than words.
“[Richmond] discovered that belief comes from winning and performing well on the field,” he commented.

“Melbourne simply didn’t run, chase, or defend over the weekend.
“That is subpar, absolute rubbish, and means nothing — they are just a lot of talk.”

“Melbourne has been talking for years now.”
In an effort to improve their culture, Melbourne has sought the expertise of respected mindset and leadership coach Ben Crowe.
The team also organised a pre-season camp in Bright last November, where players were urged to engage in “heart-to-heart” discussions.
However, Lloyd remains sceptical about whether these efforts are yielding positive results.
“You can’t just manufacture it,” he stated regarding team unity.
“You can’t simply declare, ‘Right, we’re going to adopt love as our guiding principle and aim to regain it at the club.’
“It all revolves around actions; words mean very little.”
The Demons are set to face the Cats at Kardinia Park on Friday night, desperately seeking their first win of 2025.
