Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has branded Andre Onana as “one of the worst goalkeepers” in the club’s history, responding sharply to the shot-stopper’s assertion that the Premier League team is “far better” than Lyon.
Ruben Amorim’s struggling United squad is set to face the French team on Thursday in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final.
Currently sitting in 13th place in the Premier League after a dismal season, United, however, remain undefeated in European competition.
Following the Manchester derby on Sunday, which ended in a stalemate at 0-0, Onana commented that defeating Lyon, who stand fifth in Ligue 1, is “not going to be easy, but I think we are way better than them.”
This confident statement was posed to the typically reserved Matic just before the first leg in France.
“I believe in respecting everyone, but for you to make such claims, you must be prepared to back them up,” said the Serbian international, who previously played for Chelsea in the Premier League.
“If you are regarded as one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history, you should consider the implications of your words.”
“If David De Gea or Peter Schmeichel or (Edwin) van der Sar made such statements, I would be questioning myself.”
“But if you’re statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in United’s modern era, then you need to prove yourself before making such claims. We shall see.”
