Former Wallaby Mat Rogers has urged Rugby Australia to maintain its careful strategy in finding a successor to Joe Schmidt.
In early February, Rugby Australia announced that Schmidt would step down as head coach after the British and Irish Lions tour and the final Bledisloe Cup match.
However, two months later, Rugby Australia’s steadfast approach is evident, with no confirmation yet regarding a potential replacement.
Michael Cheika was seen meeting with RA CEO Phil Waugh, while candidates such as Les Kiss, Dan McKellar, and Stephen Larkham have all been mentioned in discussions. Former England coach Stuart Lancaster has also reportedly been in talks.

While some people express impatience, Rogers appreciates the composed approach, noting that the incoming coach will be stepping into a favourable situation.
“From an outsider’s perspective, the next coach will likely find themselves in the best position that any Australian coach has had for the last 15 years or so, especially considering the context of Super Rugby and the Wallabies’ performance last year,” he remarked on Stan Sport’s Inside Line.
“Is it something we really want to rush? I’m perfectly fine with waiting.”
Justin Harrison explained that the delay is a crucial part of “due process” and concurred with Rogers that the next coach will be entering a system primed for success.
“For the first time in ages, we have a structured lead-up to an announcement, which represents a transition without the drama of someone being forced out or sacked,” he stated.
“I believe Rugby Australia is rightly undertaking a comprehensive process. The duration isn’t indicative of any issues; rather, they probably shouldn’t have committed to a shorter timeline as they are properly executing their due diligence.”
The former Wallaby added that he would be “surprised if Rugby Australia wasn’t already clear on who they intend to appoint as head coach.”
