In a thrilling encounter, Olympique Lyonnais climbed above LOSC Lille into fourth position in Ligue 1, now just a point shy of the automatic UEFA Champions League qualification berths after securing a come-from-behind victory at Groupama Stadium. Alexandre Lacazette notably added to his tally, scoring his sixth goal in seven meetings against Lille.
Earlier in the day, an unexpected defeat for Monaco at Brest opened up a pathway for Lille to apply pressure on the second-placed Monaco, but it took Lille less than a minute to find the back of the net.
Following a miscontrol by home midfielder Tanner Tessmann that led to a corner, Mitchel Bakker delivered a pinpoint cross. Captain Benjamin Andre connected first before centre-back Bafode Diakite executed a remarkable flicked header that put Lille in the lead.
Lyon’s situation deteriorated further when Ernest Nuamah had to be substituted due to an injury sustained ironically after fouling Gabriel Gudmundsson, bringing Rayan Cherki into the fray.
Lyon nearly fell two goals down just 18 minutes into the match, as Diakite’s header from another corner went narrowly wide.
However, Lyon managed to equalise just before half-time after a VAR check determined that Thomas Meunier had handled Lacazette’s header. The Lyon captain then confidently converted from the penalty spot, sending Lucas Chevalier the wrong way.
With the momentum on their side, Lyon finished the first half stronger, even though neither Paulo Fonseca—facing his former club while serving a nine-month touchline suspension—nor Bruno Genesio made any substitutions at the interval.
Early in the second half, Lacazette had a chance to add a second goal but failed to chip Chevalier after the Lille keeper misplayed a pass, allowing Lyon’s talisman to seize the opportunity.
Lyon goalkeeper Lucas Perri experienced a moment of panic when his unconventional clearance struck the encroaching Jonathan David, but Perri quickly recovered to make a crucial instinctive save, denying Matias Fernandez-Pardo.
Midway through the second half, Fonseca decided to substitute Lacazette as part of a double change, but it didn’t take long for Lyon to reverse the tide. Corentin Tolisso sent a header down for Cherki to unleash a strike from around 12 yards, a shot Chevalier could have handled better.
Aside from Hakon Arnar Haraldsson’s late effort that found Perri’s grasp, Lille posed minimal threat in the final moments. Lyon maintained control of the match, although Thiago Almada wasted a golden opportunity to secure a third goal in the 90th minute.
Lyon has now gone four consecutive matches without defeat for the first time since 2008 and will next prepare for their UEFA Europa League quarter-final first leg against Manchester United, while Lille looks ahead to their Ligue 1 fixture next Saturday against Toulouse.
