Liverpool’s pursuit of silverware has been streamlined to what seems like a mere formality, as they are on the brink of clinching the Premier League title. This scenario could lead to an anti-climactic conclusion for manager Arne Slot’s inaugural season at the helm.
However, former striker Robbie Fowler doesn’t subscribe to that sentiment. He believes that securing a record-equalling 20th English title will satisfy the fans’ cravings for trophies.
“If you told any Liverpool supporter at the beginning of the season, ‘You can perform well in the Champions League, top your group, reach the final, but you’ll win the Premier League’, what do you reckon their choice would be?
“I think the clear answer would be that they’d prefer to win the Premier League. Many fans missed out on that joy last time due to COVID, with no supporters allowed in the stadium.
“This time, it’ll be even more special. The significance of this title will likely outweigh any negativity from the season.”
Poor Performance
Liverpool endured what could be described as their most disappointing display of the season, losing 2-1 to Newcastle United in the League Cup final, just days after being eliminated from the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shootout. Earlier in February, they suffered a shocking defeat in the FA Cup against lower-league side Plymouth Argyle.
Currently, Slot’s team is a commanding 12 points clear in the Premier League title race, and after a lengthy break, they will resume their campaign with a home clash against Merseyside rivals Everton on April 2.
Fowler, who is set to manage a North of England legends team against the South, considers the upcoming match against Everton as the perfect opportunity for Liverpool to shake off any rust.
“Looking at the bigger picture, they’re still in a very strong position,” Fowler, who netted 128 Premier League goals for Liverpool, remarked to reporters.

“They have a crucial match against Everton, who are on a good run, unbeaten in nine matches. Everyone remembers last year when some claimed that Liverpool lost the title at Goodison Park.
“I wouldn’t say that’s accurate, but it’s a narrative that the fans cling to. A year later, they have the opportunity to face Everton and really solidify their title.
The ongoing contract negotiations involving Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold also pose potential distractions for Liverpool as they approach the final stretch of the season. While Alexander-Arnold has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, Fowler believes the club should ensure they retain at least two of those key players.
Salah has been in fine form, boasting 27 goals and 17 assists in the Premier League this season.
“I’d advocate for giving him what he desires because he’s proven his worth,” Fowler commented. “Any new player brought into Liverpool would command a significant transfer fee and high wages. Why not invest that money in someone who is already established?”
