Lionel Messi revealed that his choice to move to Major League Soccer club Inter Miami as a free agent stemmed from his challenging experiences at Paris Saint-Germain, a time he described as one he “didn’t enjoy”.
The 37-year-old Argentine, who secured two Ligue 1 titles and the French Super Cup in 2022 during his two years in the French capital, parted ways with PSG in 2023.
“Joining Inter (Miami) was an opportunity that arose due to the way things unfolded in my final years in Paris,” the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner shared in an interview with Apple Music on Friday.
“It was a decision I needed to make after leaving Barcelona, and those two years were not enjoyable for me.”
“I wasn’t happy on a daily basis, whether it was training sessions or matches; I found it difficult to adapt to the whole situation.” the captain of Argentina went on to say.
Messi, who racked up ten La Liga titles, four Champions League trophies, and three Club World Cups with his lifelong club Barcelona, had to depart in 2021 when the club faced financial constraints that made it impossible to retain him, leading him to sign a two-year agreement with PSG.
However, following his triumph with Argentina at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Messi faced backlash from PSG fans after a disappointing Champions League run that season, especially after he was suspended for an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia, during which he missed a training session.
“MLS has developed and continues to evolve. I hope it maintains this momentum, inspiring other clubs to follow the example set by Inter Miami and enhancing the overall competition,” he expressed.
