Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has addressed the media in anticipation of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.
Currently sitting at 18th in the league and five points adrift of Wolverhampton Wanderers, relegation-threatened Ipswich is seeking a much-needed win against 12th-placed Palace to bolster their survival hopes. McKenna discussed his team’s league position, recent form, and the potential to turn challenging situations into advantageous outcomes.
“The players have taken some positives from the match against Forest; we recognise there are 11 games left, and everyone is eager to focus on those fixtures,” he said.
“If we maintain the right approach and find the appropriate response in our daily efforts, regardless of the outcomes, we can make progress.
“By staying consistent in our behaviour, adhering to our processes, and cultivating the culture here, we can foster trust within the group.”
He was later asked whether the dynamic between points and performance shifts as the season progresses towards its conclusion, especially with relegation looming.
“The atmosphere does alter slightly. Naturally, as the season winds down and fewer games remain, the results begin to weigh more heavily. However, we believe that the most effective way to secure points is by concentrating on our performances and striving to execute our game plan to the best of our abilities for each match,” he remarked.
McKenna also reflected on this weekend’s opponents, acknowledging that every game presents its own challenges regardless of the team involved.
“No match in the Premier League is going to be anything short of fiercely competitive. If we can execute our strategies effectively, we will ensure the games remain competitive. Crystal Palace is a formidable team that has certainly improved as the season has progressed,” he stated.
Lastly, he addressed the potential availability of Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who recently sustained a head injury during last weekend’s FA Cup triumph against Millwall, which may play to Ipswich’s advantage.
“I can’t confirm with 100% certainty whether he will be available or not. He is a crucial player for Crystal Palace and has had an outstanding season, notably scoring the decisive goal against us at Portman Road,” McKenna noted.
“It would be unwise to consider him their sole threat, especially with players like Eze and Saar in peak form as well. We recognise that we are up against a strong side, regardless of Mateta’s status, and we must prepare accordingly.”
