Inter Milan secured a dramatic 2-1 win against Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday, showcasing the resilience of the Italian side. Coach Simone Inzaghi emphasised that while this victory is significant, there’s still work to be done.
In their pursuit of a treble, Inter, who have allowed only three goals in 11 Champions League matches this season, clinched a late winner from Davide Frattesi in the 88th minute, just moments after Bayern equalised through substitute Thomas Müller.
This marked Bayern’s first loss at home in this tournament since April 2021.
Inzaghi expressed contentment with his team’s performance, stating, “Our game showed considerable depth, which is pleasing. We recognise Bayern’s strengths; we’ve achieved something important, but it won’t matter unless we replicate this in the second leg at San Siro before our supporters.”
“We understand this is only the first half of the tie, with the second leg to be played at San Siro. Bayern are a formidable opponent, yet Inter matched them in terms of determination, courage, and aggression,” he added.
Inter’s captain, Lautaro Martinez, gave them the lead in the 38th minute after Bayern’s Harry Kane struck the post early in the match.
Despite extensive possession for Bayern, Inter’s robust defence stood strong for the majority of the encounter.
Inzaghi noted, “They made attempts, but they encountered an Inter side that played well. Our counterattack led to a fantastic goal, even after conceding the equaliser just prior.”
He continued, “We had to stifle Bayern’s possession. When they control the ball, it becomes challenging to regain it. We approached this match with confidence.”
“Bayern pressed us, yet Inter showcased quality football to navigate through it. We deserve credit for maintaining our belief in victory until the very last minute, even after conceding a goal shortly before,” Inzaghi remarked.
The second leg is scheduled for next week, and the victor will face either Barcelona or Borussia Dortmund.
