Son Heung-min expressed his disappointment, stating he “let my teammates down” after South Korea faced a setback in World Cup qualifying, managing only a 1-1 draw against Oman at home.
The Tottenham forward was unable to find the net on Thursday, as the South Koreans squandered an opportunity to move significantly closer to next summer’s tournament set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Coach Hong Myung-bo described the draw as “our worst performance” in the third round of Asian qualifying, noting that they conceded the equaliser with just 10 minutes remaining.
South Korea’s lead at the top of Group B has been trimmed to three points over both Jordan and Iraq, with only the top two teams earning direct qualification.
“I feel like I let my teammates down today,” said Son during the post-match press conference in Goyang, near Seoul.
“However, this isn’t the only match we’ll play as a team.
“We’ve managed to create some positive situations to come this far. We need to learn from this match and aim for the next step.“
South Korea will host Jordan on Tuesday in a vital clash, followed by an away fixture against Iraq before Group B concludes in June.
“Some might think this qualification process is easy, but we have to exert ourselves in every match
“This match serves as a valuable lesson. We must extract any positives we can from it.“
South Korea initially took the lead just before half-time with a goal from Wolves’ Hwang Hee-chan, but Oman managed to equalise late in the game during a rare attacking move.
Hong sharply criticised his team’s display.
“We surrendered possession too easily, and even though we were ahead by a goal, I felt we were not in control of the match,” the coach remarked.
“The opponent didn’t create many chances, yet they still managed to score.“
