After Denmark’s narrow 1-0 victory over Portugal, Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund explained that the unique celebration he performed after netting the decisive goal was a tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo, and he firmly dismissed any claims that it was intended to mock the iconic player.
Having gone without a goal since October 17, 2023, during an away fixture against San Marino, Hojlund struck the only goal of the match with just 15 minutes remaining. He expertly dispatched the ball into an unguarded net following a well-coordinated attack, securing a vital win for Denmark ahead of the return match in Lisbon.
Hojlund couldn’t contain his joy after finally finding the back of the net for Denmark in such a crucial encounter.
“I played against the world’s best footballer, my idol, and to score and be the matchwinner, it couldn’t be better,” Hojlund remarked.
When quizzed post-match about mimicking the renowned ‘Siiiu’ celebration made famous by Cristiano Ronaldo back in the summer of 2013, Hojlund clarified his intentions.
“It was for my idol. I didn’t mean to mock him in any way. He’s been incredibly significant to both me and my football journey. While it may come across as a bit mixed, scoring against him and Portugal is monumental,” he explained.
“I remember watching him score a free kick back in 2011, and ever since that day, I have been a massive fan of Cristiano,” Hojlund told TV 2 Sport following the victory.
Denmark is set to face off against Portugal again on Sunday for the return leg.
