Freiburg surged into the Bundesliga’s top six after a 2-1 comeback triumph over Borussia Mönchengladbach, extending their unbeaten streak against the opposition to eight encounters.
With both sides battling it out for European qualification and sitting just two points apart prior to kick-off, it was perhaps no surprise that the opening exchanges were closely contested. Gladbach had the upper hand early on and were rewarded with an opening goal in the first 15 minutes, albeit under rather lucky circumstances.
After the hosts lost possession, they launched a swift counter-attack, releasing Franck Honorat down the right flank. His cross was unfortunately redirected into the net by the unfortunate Christian Günter.
This own goal encapsulated Freiburg’s recent struggles, yet rather than wallow in self-pity, they quickly equalised just two minutes later.

Freiburg’s equaliser also stemmed from a delivery on the right flank, with Lukas Kübler’s arching cross met by Patrick Osterhage at the back post, marking his first goal for the club since joining last summer.
With the score at 1-1, both teams created opportunities, notably Robin Hack, who struck the post after intercepting Kübler’s pass in the area.
Freiburg appeared more threatening after the restart, forcing Gladbach’s young goalkeeper Tiago Pereira Cardoso into action as he denied Junior Adamu a chance to score his first Bundesliga goal since September.
The remarkable 19-year-old then made an incredible save to keep Lucas Höler’s rebound from crossing the line, making it one of the standout saves of the season.

Freiburg maintained pressure on their opponents throughout the second half and finally found their breakthrough in the 90th minute. Ritsu Dōan delivered a well-placed cross into the box, allowing Johan Manzambi to head in his first senior goal for the club, clinching all three points.
This victory marks the end of a frustrating five-match winless streak for Freiburg, while Gerardo Seoane’s squad finds themselves slipping further behind in the tightly fought battle for European qualification.
