Davide Frattesi of Inter Milan triumphed over personal grief to secure a late match-winner in Tuesday’s 2-1 Champions League victory against Bayern Munich. This emotional moment came just a day after the midfielder experienced the loss of his grandmother, who passed away prior to the first leg of their quarter-final showdown.
The visitors, led by captain Lautaro Martinez, took the lead in the 38th minute, only for Thomas Muller to bring Bayern level with a goal in the 85th minute.
Frattesi, who was substituted onto the pitch in the 74th minute, ensured Inter regained their advantage with just two minutes remaining in regular time, providing the treble-seeking Italians with a vital edge to carry into the next leg.
“Throughout my life, I have always believed my strongest asset is my mentality. However, I found myself in a situation where I struggled to maintain that focus,” Frattesi shared with Inter TV.
“I was extremely close to my grandmother and wasn’t accustomed to seeing her in that condition.
“It was difficult, but I am certain she was with me in spirit tonight. Perhaps she was cheering me on from above.”
The 25-year-old expressed gratitude for the great outcome, especially following Saturday’s 2-2 Serie A draw against relegation-threatened Parma, but emphasised the importance of maintaining concentration as they move into the title closing stages.
“We aim to be more aggressive in our attacks, and we must be effective when we regain possession, just as we were leading up to the second goal this evening,” stated Frattesi regarding the upcoming second leg.
“We need to perform well and show no mercy.”
