Phil Gould has offered some sage advice to clubs considering a move for Daly Cherry-Evans, as there’s currently no fixed timeline regarding the future of the Manly star.
The 36-year-old is set to depart the Sea Eagles at season’s end and has been linked to several clubs eager to secure a premier playmaker.
While it’s anticipated that Cherry-Evans will aim to extend his distinguished career, the Maroons captain has yet to make an official announcement regarding his plans.
On Six Tackles With Gus, his podcast on Wide World of Sports, the football director at Canterbury shared insights on the challenges clubs face in attempting to sign Cherry-Evans, a decision that may not come to fruition until after the 2025 season.

“He hasn’t made a decision about continuing his career, and that’s quite significant,” Gould noted.
“This presents a dilemma for all clubs vying for his services. They need to keep a spot open and budget accordingly.
“If he delays his decision until the end of the season, which is in October, and they keep the position available, they may find themselves in a difficult situation if he chooses not to continue.”
“Clubs looking to secure Daly Cherry-Evans must be aware they might have to hold an option open and keep funds available until October, risking other opportunities slipping by.”
As things stand, the Sydney Roosters and Dolphins appear to be leading the pack if Cherry-Evans opts to continue for a 16th season in the NRL.
Conversely, the Sea Eagles have attained some clarity on their situation, with Gould highlighting a silver lining for the club during a turbulent period.
“Manly now understands he won’t be returning,” he observed.
“This clarity allows them to move forward and gives them the financial flexibility to explore other options.”
Jamal Fogarty has surfaced as a potential target for Manly, with reports indicating the club’s interest dates back to November.
