Queensland coach Billy Slater has expressed that the prospect of young Raiders talent Xavier Savage playing in the State of Origin is “not beyond” him, although he acknowledged that there is still a significant amount of improvement needed.
Savage showcased his skills in the season opener for the Green Machine on Sunday, scoring two tries in their commanding 30-8 victory against the Warriors, including a remarkable long-range intercept.
He also amassed 219 run metres and executed seven tackle breaks at Allegiant Stadium.

The 22-year-old has had a rollercoaster journey with Canberra since he made his debut a few years back, yet Slater believes he’s finally starting to find his rhythm.
“He really performed well, scoring a couple of tries and showcasing a strong game,” the Maroons coach remarked on Nine’s Billy Slater Podcast.
“Post-match, Ricky Stuart spoke highly of the time invested in Xavier’s development.
“It hasn’t always been smooth sailing; he’s spent time in reserve grade and had to work hard to improve his game, but those efforts are now paying off.
“It appears he had a significant off-season. I thought he was outstanding in that first match.”
Savage has scored 26 tries in his 48 top-grade matches to date, transitioning into a wing position after initially starting his NRL career as a dynamic fullback.

Though he currently sits down the selection ladder for an Origin spot, Slater remains optimistic about Savage’s potential to rise as he continues to hone his skills.
“I hope that’s an aspiration for Xavier, and I truly do,” he added.
“He’s a remarkable young talent, and while Origin isn’t imminent for him, it could certainly be achievable in the future.

“I imagine he idolised the Maroons while growing up and drew inspiration from them. I hope that represents a future goal for him, and right now, he is hitting several key milestones for the Raiders.
“There are still aspects of his game that require attention and improvement. We all saw the intercept try, which was impressive, but he also chased after a few others near the end of the match that led to tries for the Warriors.
“It’s a matter of consistency and ongoing learning, and I’m sure Ricky Stuart and the coaching staff will appreciate the positive contributions Xavier made during the review sessions, even while noting the areas for growth.”
Currently, players like Xavier Coates, Selwyn Cobbo and Murray Taulagi are all ahead of Savage when considering wing positions at the representative level.
Unfortunately, Savage looks set to sit out Canberra’s round two clash due to suspension, and their captain Joseph Tapine may also face time on the sidelines.
