Erik ten Hag was reportedly uncertain about Cristiano Ronaldo’s capacity to fulfil a crucial tactical requirement prior to his dramatic exit from Manchester United.
The Portuguese superstar made his return to United in 2021 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, where he had a stellar first season, netting 24 goals.
However, his second season under Ten Hag was significantly less impactful, resulting in growing tensions and ultimately, his departure.
In an interview with Ladbrokes, former United assistant Benni McCarthy stated: “Erik wanted to implement pressing from the outset.
“In his earlier days at Real Madrid, Ronaldo was capable of executing what Erik envisioned, such as high pressing and still having enough energy to position himself to score.
“While Ronaldo was adapting his game considerably, it didn’t align with Erik’s preferred style. Therefore, Erik felt it simply wouldn’t work.
“Having Cristiano in the starting line-up wouldn’t complement the way we intended to play, which is why Erik favoured Anthony Martial.”
