Everton manager David Moyes acknowledged that James Tarkowski’s tackle on Liverpool was reckless, despite the centre-back avoiding a red card, but he stood by his player on Friday after he was subjected to online harassment and death threats following the incident.
In Liverpool’s 1-0 victory, Tarkowski successfully challenged Alexis Mac Allister for the ball, but his studs-up follow-through inadvertently connected with the Argentine midfielder’s calf.
The defender received a yellow card, and VAR chose not to intervene. Following considerable backlash, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) admitted that Tarkowski should have been sent off for serious foul play.
“It’s not acceptable for anyone in any walk of life. We have to admit, upon reviewing it, that it could have warranted a sending off,” Moyes stated to the press.
“However, that does not justify the abuse he’s received online because of it. That’s football for you.”
“At the time, it seemed like a solid tackle. But on closer inspection, it was indeed a bit reckless.”
Everton has condemned the abusive messages aimed at Tarkowski and confirmed they are aware of threats directed at him and his family.
“The club is in communication with James and his wife Samantha, and is prepared to work with social media platforms and support law enforcement in any potential investigation,” Everton stated in an official release.
The defeat to Liverpool marked Everton’s first loss in ten league matches, leaving Moyes’s squad in 15th place ahead of their home fixture against second-placed Arsenal on Saturday.
Despite being 14 points clear of the relegation zone, Moyes remains cautious about Premier League survival with eight matches still to play.
“We’ve accumulated a decent points total, but we’re not mathematically secure yet, and escaping the relegation zone will be a challenge for those teams down there,” he remarked.
“There’s still plenty to play for… A lot of players are nearing the end of their contracts. We need to ensure our players stay focused and maintain the right mentality.”
