Daly Cherry-Evans has characterised the backlash surrounding his departure from Manly as a “smear campaign,” following his team’s 26-12 triumph over the Eels.
Ahead of the match, there was considerable speculation regarding whether Cherry-Evans would face boos from local supporters, but he was met with applause as he entered the field.
True to form, the halfback orchestrated his side’s play with exceptional skill, amassing an impressive 622 kicking metres.
In a post-match interview with Nine’s Brad Fittler, a visibly relieved Cherry-Evans acknowledged the extra motivation to secure a solid win.

“That was great. There are obviously personal reasons why it’s important to finish a week like this with a win, but sometimes you have to set aside your ego and ensure that the team’s focus remains on the task at hand, and I believe we executed that really well today,” he said.
“They were incredibly eager for a victory, and they put us under pressure at times throughout the second half. So, I’m genuinely proud of our team, especially considering the injuries to Tom Trbojevic and Josh Aloiai and the overall disruption we’ve faced.”

The halfback also admitted to feeling more anxious than usual prior to the match.
“It’s difficult to distinguish between personal aspects and your ego, especially when this past week felt like a blow with attempts to tarnish my reputation, but this is the time of week I cherish the most,” Cherry-Evans said.
“It’s the moment where everything else fades away, and I can just focus on playing.
“I’m incredibly proud of the boys for securing the win. I was a bit on edge and definitely relieved.”}
