Supporters of Newcastle United have voiced their apprehension over the Premier League club’s announcement on Friday to engage a portion of the fanbase concerning potential alterations to the club’s renowned crest, which has been in place for 37 years.
The club articulated that the existing crest was “designed in a different era” and that its elaborate layout doesn’t necessarily “translate well in today’s digital landscape.”
Newcastle has encouraged season ticket holders and members to share their insights in what they have termed an independently conducted survey. However, the Newcastle United Supporters Trust has raised concerns regarding the survey’s format.
“The survey is constructed in a significantly leading manner throughout, making it challenging to ascertain how any meaningful fan engagement or dependable conclusions can be drawn from it,” they stated in a letter addressed to club CEO Darren Eales.
The trust also highlighted a stipulation in the Football Association’s regulations, which requires a club to demonstrate that a majority of its supporters endorse any significant modification to its crest before such changes can occur.
“Currently, the survey does not possess the capability to provide insights into whether the majority of our supporters are amenable to the prospect of making a significant alteration,” they added.
“In order to comply with FA regulations, we strongly recommend that the club implement a new survey, articulated in a neutral tone, and include an option for supporters to express a desire to maintain the existing crest without any alterations.”
The current crest, in use since 1988, features elements from the city’s Coat of Arms, including the castle, the demi-lion, two seahorses flanking the sides, and a pennon.
“Given that the crest is a recognised Heritage Asset and an essential emblem that unites our city, we are merely requesting that the consultation process closely adheres to FA guidelines,” the trust stated.
