Carlo Ancelotti, the manager of Real Madrid, voiced his assurance on Friday that UEFA’s ongoing investigation into alleged player misconduct will reach a favourable conclusion, as some of his players might miss crucial upcoming matches.
The governing body of European football initiated an inquiry on Thursday regarding a possible breach of disciplinary rules by various Real players following their recent Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid.
This investigation centres on accusations of inappropriate conduct involving Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, Dani Ceballos, and Vinícius Jr. A ruling could affect Real’s upcoming Champions League quarter-final fixtures against Arsenal on the 8th and 16th of April, with reports from Spanish media suggesting potential suspensions may be issued.
“We believe everything was carried out correctly, and we are hopeful that UEFA will reach a decision that reflects this. We have faith that everything will turn out positively,” Ancelotti told the press.
While UEFA has not specified the incidents under scrutiny, Spanish reports indicate that Atletico lodged a complaint regarding Real’s players mocking their supporters with gestures and dances after the match, prompting objects to be thrown at them.
“We have confidence in UEFA’s ruling as the players were merely celebrating; that’s all. We remain patient for the verdict, knowing our players didn’t do anything inappropriate,” added Ancelotti.
The Italian manager noted that his team would strive to keep hold of their LaLiga title, despite sitting three points behind league leaders Barcelona. Both clubs are still vying for success in the Champions League and Copa del Rey.
“Barcelona holds an advantage, but we will battle until the very end. I anticipate we have around 17 matches (across all competitions) left in the season,” Ancelotti stated.
Real Madrid will be without goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for Saturday’s home league encounter against Leganes, due to a muscle injury. Ancelotti expressed optimism about other players returning in time for the match against Arsenal.
“Courtois is facing a minor issue, and we’re working to get Ceballos and (Ferland) Mendy fit for the first leg against Arsenal,” Ancelotti revealed.
“The final phase of the season begins now, and we must approach it with utmost seriousness. The stakes are high, as every match could prove pivotal.”
