Stade Brestois snatched a dramatic 2-1 victory over AS Monaco in Ligue 1, concluding a streak of six consecutive defeats against the visitors.
Monaco, having secured just one win in their last 10 away fixtures (D3, L6), began the match with intensity, applying pressure on the hosts. However, they failed to create any significant chances to challenge Marco Bizot during a frantic first half marked by numerous fouls and aggressive tackles.
Brest eventually found their footing and conjured the first genuine opportunity when Philipp Kohn hesitantly punched the ball towards the edge of the area, where Mahdi Camara was lurking. Fortunately for the Swiss goalkeeper, he redeemed himself with a crucial save.
As the first half seemed destined to end without goals, a defensive error just before the whistle allowed the home side to take the lead.
Kohn appeared set to save a shot from Abdallah Sima, but was obstructed by Thilo Kehrer, attempting to block the effort. The ball then looped over Kohn and into the back of the net, marking an own goal against him.
Adi Hutter made a double substitution following the restart, and, mirroring the first half, Monaco began brightly, yet without creating any clear opportunities.
This changed shortly after the hour mark when a VAR review penalised Kenny Lala for a handball at close range in the area. Denis Zakaria confidently converted the penalty, driving it past Bizot.
Inspired by a sense of injustice, the hosts regained control over the match following the equaliser, although they remained cautious of Monaco’s counter-attacks, with Eliesse Ben Seghir forcing a superb fingertip save from Bizot.
Just when it seemed both teams would settle for a draw, Camara found the net with a breathtaking strike deep into stoppage time. His long-range effort inexplicably slipped past Kohn, igniting wild celebrations among the home supporters.
This victory could be pivotal for Brest’s aspirations of European football, as they now sit just three points shy of the top six, while Monaco maintains second place, only one point clear of Marseille, but having played one game more.
