Arsenal’s emphatic victory over holders Real Madrid, allowing them to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in 16 years, has been hailed as a bold declaration of their ambitions, according to forward Bukayo Saka.
Despite missing a first-half penalty, Saka netted the opener in his side’s 2-1 triumph at the Bernabeu, completing a resounding 5-1 aggregate win for the English side.
The Gunners will now face Paris St Germain for a chance to appear in the final for only the second time in their history, having previously lost to Barcelona in 2006.
“We’ve demonstrated that we can compete in Europe and overcome one of the best teams in the world, both at home and away. I’m incredibly proud of this team,” stated Saka, who represents England, during an interview with TNT Sports.
“This evening was a significant statement, and I couldn’t be happier for everyone.”
Saka’s Panenka-style penalty, which was thwarted by Thibaut Courtois early on when the score was still level, seemed like it could have been a crucial turning point, but Arsenal maintained their composure to consolidate a comfortable 3-0 lead from the first leg.
“These things happen. I attempted something different, but it didn’t pan out. I felt confident I would score tonight,” Saka remarked.
“I learn from every experience. Right now, I’m focused on relishing the victory, and I’ll review the match thoroughly later.”
Facing a formidable Paris St Germain, who eliminated Premier League leaders Liverpool in the Round of 16 and Aston Villa in the quarter-finals, Arsenal will host the first leg of the semi-final at the end of April.
“I see them playing with a lot more confidence. We’ll be ready, and it’s going to be an exciting match,” Saka added.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta described the win over Real Madrid as one of the highlights of his career.
“I’m extremely proud of the players,” expressed the Spaniard. “After just a couple of minutes, you realise that anything can happen.”
Looking forward to their match against PSG, a team Arsenal managed to defeat in the group stage this season, Arteta acknowledged their impressive form.
“They are an entirely different team now and are on a remarkable run at the moment. I know the manager very well,” said Arteta, reflecting on his time at PSG as a player.
“However, tonight proved we can hold our own against any opponent.”
