Tottenham Hotspur have finally re-established their winning form following a challenging season marred by injuries. Their Welsh winger, Brennan Johnson, 23, showcased his value with a superb brace during the Premier League clash against Ipswich Town on Saturday.
Having sustained a calf injury in the match against Arsenal in mid-January, Johnson made a triumphant return to the starting line-up at Portman Road, where he netted twice in the first half. This victory marked Spurs’ third consecutive win and their best streak since December 2023, with the final score reading 4-1.
Despite a series of setbacks, including a defeat in the League Cup semi-finals to Liverpool and an exit in the FA Cup fourth round against Aston Villa, Tottenham still have opportunities to strive for, eyeing a spot in the last 16 of the Europa League with a match against AZ Alkmaar scheduled for next month.
“We have always held onto hope,” commented Johnson. “With all our players back on the pitch, we’ve secured victories in our last two Premier League matches, and that’s something we aimed to maintain. We played well against Ipswich, showcasing both attacking flair and solid defending.”
“Having our experienced players return has been crucial; they know how to control the game. We were conscious of the previous defeat to them, which motivated us not to suffer another loss today,” he added, alluding to Tottenham’s earlier 2-1 loss to Ipswich at home this season.
Spurs’ manager Ange Postecoglou expressed his satisfaction with having Johnson’s goal-scoring ability back, particularly as the club’s primary striker Dominic Solanke remains sidelined due to injury.
“We were always a threat. Sonny (Son Heung-min) was exceptional in that first half, and it’s fantastic to have Brennan back, as he contributes so many goals in those critical areas,” Postecoglou said.
“He has a great sense of timing when to make his runs and is incredibly clinical. He’s missed a lot of action on the pitch.
“The past two weeks have given us a chance to recharge and reassess our style of play, and I’m pleased the lads have embraced this opportunity.”
Johnson’s father, David, is fondly remembered for his goal-scoring exploits during his tenure at Ipswich in the late 1990s, netting 55 times in 131 league appearances for the club. However, his son remained focused solely on the game at hand.
“My dad enjoyed his time here and holds the club in high regard. For me, it was all about securing three points,” said the Wales international.
“Tottenham Hotspur is our club, and we aspire to climb as high as possible in the league standings.”
With this victory, Spurs positioned themselves in 12th place, amassing 33 points, and are now setting their sights upward after a concerning dip towards the relegation zone.
