Nelson Weiper’s equaliser in the 75th minute ensured that FSV Mainz retained their position within the top four of the Bundesliga, salvaging a 1-1 draw against struggling Holstein Kiel.
No team has historically escaped relegation at this point in a Bundesliga season after languishing at the bottom, trailing eight points behind safety. Nevertheless, Kiel came close to making their mark just 10 minutes into the match.
Nicolai Remberg, expertly played through on goal by Steven Skrzybski’s brilliant cross, must have fancied his chances to secure his inaugural goal of the season. However, he was thwarted by a quick off-the-line reaction from goalkeeper Robin Zentner.
The action-packed first half continued nine minutes later when Paul Nebel’s incisive pass set up Jonathan Burkardt in a one-on-one situation against Thomas Dähne. Although Burkardt managed to bypass Kiel’s new number one, he faced disappointment as his shot rebounded off the right post, denying him his 16th league goal of the campaign.

At the other end, Zentner sprang into action again, producing a stunning save to tip Shūto Machino’s header over the bar. However, his resilience was finally breached in the 34th minute when Alexander Bernhardsson curled in a stunning effort from outside the box, finding the top corner.
Conceding seemed to energise Mainz after the break. After several missed chances, the hosts struck the post twice in quick succession, first through Anthony Caci’s header and then Skrzybski’s follow-up attempt which also hit the woodwork.
Eventually, Mainz’s persistence paid off after Nikolas Veratschnig’s disallowed goal for offside, as Weiper found the net with a well-timed shot from Nebel’s accurate pass that left Dähne with no chance.
This frustrating result drops Mainz to just a single point above fifth-placed RB Leipzig, intensifying the struggle for next season’s UEFA Champions League qualification. Meanwhile, Holstein Kiel continues their fight against relegation, firmly positioned at the bottom of the Bundesliga.
