Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann has included Inter Milan defender Yann Aurel Bisseck in the squad for the first time ahead of the Nations League quarter-final clash against Italy, while Nadiem Amiri is making a return after a five-year hiatus from the national team.
Bisseck, who has represented Germany at youth level, has featured 29 times across all competitions this season and is familiar with the San Siro, which will host the first leg on March 20th. The return fixture will take place three days later in Dortmund.
Meanwhile, Amiri last donned the Germany shirt back in 2020, but his impressive form this season—boasting seven goals and three assists for Mainz—has earned him another opportunity to contribute, becoming a key player for his side currently sitting third in the Bundesliga and vying for Champions League qualification.
Additionally, seven other players are making a comeback to the squad, including Karim Adeyemi (Borussia Dortmund) and Leon Goretzka (Bayern Munich), while Aleksandar Pavlovic, Florian Wirtz, and Kai Havertz are sidelined due to injuries.
“Despite some absences, we still possess a very strong squad,” Nagelsmann stated.
“We selected these players with conviction and aimed to compensate for the missing quality by incorporating those eager to contribute.”
“The quarter-final against Italy is crucial for us. We absolutely need to approach these two matches with a positive mindset.”
There’s an added incentive for the quarter-final, as the victorious team will also host the Nations League semi-finals and finals in June.
If Germany secures the win, the matches will be held in Munich and Stuttgart; however, if Italy claims victory, Turin will be the chosen venue.
