Ben Chilwell, currently on loan at Crystal Palace, has shared insights into how manager Oliver Glasner is energised by the possibility of playing at Wembley this season.
This Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham marks Palace’s first competitive outing in three weeks—a welcome break for the squad, who have been navigating an intense fixture schedule.
Having experienced both the cup final with Chelsea in the 2020/21 season and the semi-finals in 2023/24, Chilwell is well-acquainted with the pressures that come with knockout football.
In a chat with the club’s website, the 28-year-old highlighted the determination within the team and how Glasner has embraced the excitement surrounding Wembley in the lead-up to the match.
“I’ve been to Wembley a few times!” Chilwell grinned. “We’re all incredibly motivated and ready for this challenge.”
“It’s been a few weeks since our last match, so we’ve been ensuring that every training session, as you would have seen today, has been sharp and focused.
“The manager (Oliver Glasner) makes sure we’re on top of things every day because, as I know from experience, opportunities like this don’t happen very often.”
“He’s talked about it quite a bit, mentioning that he’s never been to Wembley. This morning, he even went to the (England) game (on Monday) just to soak in the atmosphere, and it’s made him even more driven. I’m sure there are a few lads in the dressing room who haven’t experienced Wembley either.”
“The motivation is definitely there. If we can secure a win on Saturday—something we are very keen on—then the next step will be Wembley. There’s really no greater motivation than that.”
Jean-Philippe Mateta, who was substituted due to injury in the quarter-final win against Millwall, is set to return for the Eagles, and Chilwell believes his presence could be pivotal.
“Before I joined Palace, I watched him play on TV,” Chilwell remarked. “We all know how talented he is and how effective he can be in front of goal.”
“However, what has truly impressed me is his presence around the club. He’s like the glue that holds us together—always the loudest in the dressing room and a key figure around here. You need people like that.”
“Those personalities are crucial in the locker room. You definitely notice his absence; he brings such a lively spirit to the place.”
“On top of that, as I mentioned, he’s having a fantastic season and has done well in previous seasons too. Having him back this weekend will be a significant boost, and I’m hopeful he can make a difference for us.”
